The Facts about Female Breast Piercing

If you are reading this article, chances are you or someone you know is contemplating nipple piercing. One of the most common reasons for female breast piercing is based on the belief that it increases sexual sensations. Some women have reported heightened pleasure during sexual activity, while others feel no change at all. And there have also been reports of a decrease in sexual stimulation. One fact that women agree on is that the procedure is a painful one.

Female Breast PiercingThe history of female breast piercing
The practice of nipple piercing is attributed to Queen Isabella of Bavaria (circa 1385 to 1417). During her reign, she introduced a fashion trend that boasted ‘garments of the grand neckline’. It meant that ladies in her Court should wear dresses open to the navel. Initially, the nipples were painted with rouge, which evolved to covering them with caps, and eventually having them pierced so that rings, chains, and diamonds or precious gems could adorn the breasts.

Fashion in the late 1800’s saw the bosom ring displayed in French jewelry stores. Women placed rings in both nipples in order to attach a delicate chain that hung across the chest. At the same time, a similar craze began in London, England, when a fashion magazine of the day reported that females who had undergone breast piercing were not uncomfortable in the least, and that, in fact, the rubbing and sliding of the rings caused a feeling of titillation.

After female breast piercing reached its popularity in the early twentieth century, it just as quickly disappeared. During this time, women with piercings and tattoos were associated with entertainment and considered oddities. In the United States, they were often seen in circuses and traveling sideshows.

The procedure for female breast piercing
Nipple piercing is like any other body piercing. The hole is made by a needle or can be clamped with an instrument just below the erect part of the nipple, but not into the areola which is the colored area around the nipple. Note that placing a hole through the areola can sometimes interfere with breast feeding. Here are some important facts concerning the procedure:

  • The piercing instrument must be sterile and free of any organisms.
  • The area where the needle is inserted must be well-cleansed with an antibacterial solution.
  • The person performing the procedure must wear medical gloves.
  • The nipple rings must be wiped with antiseptic solution and inserted immediately.
  • Nipple jewelry should be made of high quality surgical stainless steel, solid gold or titanium.

Care of pierced nipples
Remember that any time a foreign object breaks the skin, there is opportunity for infection; therefore, meticulous cleanliness of piercings must be maintained. Below are some recommendations:

  • Wash the area and nipple jewelry daily with an antiseptic solution.
  • Never touch the area unless your hands have been washed with antibacterial soap.
  • Do not allow saliva, or any other body fluid, come in contact with the area.
  • Do not apply cream or ointment on the area unless it is recommended by a medical professional.
  • Report any unusual swelling, pain, leakage, or excessive bleeding to a healthcare professional.

Female breast piercing is an invasive body procedure that entails potential health risks. In certain cases, it has caused disfigurement, and in some rare instances even death. Thoroughly research the topic of piercing, and be well-informed prior to making your decision.

Potential Complications

  • Infection- Body piercing should be viewed as any other surgical procedure. Infection is one of the more common complications and should be treated by a doctor. Oral or intravenous antibiotics may be prescribed. In extreme cases, incision and drainage may be necessary. Swelling, redness, heat and severe pain are some of the characteristics of infection.
  • Hypertropic scarring- A scar that becomes very thick and unsightly can form at the site of the piercing. Even though it may be difficult to see the spot where the needle entered the skin, some people develop this abnormal skin growth. If you know that you are prone to this scarring condition, piercing is not recommended. These scars can be surgically removed but have a propensity to reoccur.
  • Sepsis- This term is used when the breast infection involves the whole body. It is a serious condition that requires hospitalization and treatment, usually intravenously. Whole systems of the body, such as kidney function may shut down, causing coma and sometimes death.
  • HIV- If a contaminated needle is inserted in your body, you run the risk of contracting AIDS.
