Breast Prostheses

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, and for the longest time, and in the eyes of many, they are one of the features that truly define a woman’s femininity. Hence, when women undergo a mastectomy (the partial or complete removal of one or both breasts), more often than not, they end up feeling less of a woman. Aside from breast reconstruction surgery, breast prostheses can alleviate the situation.

Breast ProsthesesWhy Use Breast Prostheses?
Today, women who have had a mastectomy can reclaim their womanhood and sense of self-esteem with the use of breast prostheses, an easy and simple alternative to reconstructive surgery. Breast prostheses are forms meant to simulate breasts. It should also be noted that they are sometimes used by transgender individuals who want to give an appearance of having breasts. There are other good reasons for having breast prostheses: they help balance the body, they can prevent neck and back pain, they can hide and protect any surgical scars, and they can improve body image awareness. See here for more about body image awareness.

Different Types of Breast Prostheses
Since not all women are alike, neither are breast prostheses. They come in various colors, shapes, sizes, material, and offer different features as well. Some prostheses are with or without a nipple, and some are made specifically for swimming and others for sports. All come in an assortment of skin tones to suit your own.

Breast prostheses can be bought off the shelf or custom-made. If they are custom-made, they are molded to perfectly fit the woman by taking an impression of her breasts and forming a mirror image. Both varieties are designed so they can either be held in the pocket of a special mastectomy bra or attached directly to the skin and worn with a regular bra. The average lifespan of breast prostheses is approximately 2 years.

Below is a brief description of five different breast prostheses:

  • A silicone breast prosthesis is the closest to imitating actual breast tissue in terms of weight and shaping; it is also designed to mimic the movement of a real breast. This type of prosthesis helps prevent shoulder pain but it can, at times, feel heavy or uncomfortable if you are outdoors playing sports in the heat. The silicone breast prosthesis can be custom-made, but it is the most expensive option available.
  • A non-silicone breast prosthesis can be made from foam rubber, fiberfill or cotton. These materials are lighter, cooler and more comfortable than those of the silicone variety, especially if you are a woman who is physically active and plays sports. However, they do not have the weight, shaping, and movement of a real breast.
  • The attachable or contact breast prostheses have Velcro tabs or adhesive strips that adhere directly to the body. Since it is directly attached to you, it will also move with you. Another advantage is that it can be worn with a regular bra.
  • Adhesive nipples are available for those who undergo a mastectomy and reconstructive breast surgery, but opt not to have nipple reconstruction. These complete the look of the reconstructed breast. They are held in place with fluid adhesive and can be easily removed. They are reusable.
  • For those who have had a partial mastectomy, there is the option of a partial breast prosthesis, otherwise known as an “equalizer” which helps to fill out your bra cup on the side of your surgery. The partial prosthesis is made from silicone, foam rubber or fiberfill. It can easily be inserted into your regular bra or into the pocket of a mastectomy bra.

In order to get the proper fit, it is recommended that you consult a professional in the field. They can provide you with all the information you need, and help you with your choice of breast prosthesis, be it for one side or both.
