Breast Prostheses
Breasts come in all shapes and sizes,
and for the longest time, and in the eyes of many, they are one
of the features that truly define a woman’s femininity.
Hence, when women undergo a mastectomy
(the partial or complete removal of one or both breasts), more
often than not, they end up feeling less of a woman. Aside from
breast reconstruction surgery, breast prostheses can alleviate
the situation.
Why
Use Breast Prostheses?
Today, women who have had a mastectomy
can reclaim their womanhood and sense
of self-esteem with the use of breast
prostheses, an easy and simple alternative
to reconstructive surgery. Breast prostheses
are forms meant to simulate breasts.
It should also be noted that they are
sometimes used by transgender individuals
who want to give an appearance of having
breasts. There are other good reasons
for having breast prostheses: they help
balance the body, they can prevent neck
and back pain, they can hide and protect
any surgical scars, and they can improve
body image awareness. See here for more
about body
image awareness.
Different Types of Breast Prostheses
Since not all women are alike, neither are breast prostheses.
They come in various colors, shapes, sizes, material, and offer
different features as well. Some prostheses are with or without
a nipple, and some are made specifically for swimming and others
for sports. All come in an assortment of skin tones to suit your
own.
Breast prostheses can be bought off
the shelf or custom-made. If they are custom-made, they are molded
to perfectly fit the woman by taking an impression of her breasts
and forming a mirror image. Both varieties are designed so they
can either be held in the pocket of a special mastectomy bra or
attached directly to the skin and worn with a regular bra. The
average lifespan of breast prostheses is approximately 2 years.
